Daniela De Velasco- 1st blog

Recently I started an online speech class, I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially when it comes to presentations. My group went up first then I watched the other groups present. I usually dislike online classes because I feel they are distant, but I found myself really interested and engaged during the presentations my classmates gave, I learned so much! not just about giving a speech, but also about myself as a speaker, a teammate  and a listener . I was thinking it would just be about learning how to speak in front of people, but through the presentations and the group work, I felt less nervous, and learned that public speaking is only a part of the bigger picture. Also being able to listen actively , collaborate with others, and communicate clearly in a team setting is just as important. Each presentation focused on a different part of public speaking. From understanding the craft , to learning how to build confidence , to communicating effectively with different types of audie...

Alondra Martinez  Blog #1 - Public Speaking   Watching everyone deliver this first class presentation was encouraging and made me realize we all have things to learn. I think all four groups did great overall and made everything work out as smooth as possible to deliver their presentation clearly. I think group 1 as known as my group did very well. I know for a fact we were all nervous or not 100% confident but made sure our point was thoroughly made. I believe we had a great introduction and outro, there were some difficulties yet in the end everything was resolved and nicely done. This group covered the importance of confidence in one’s speech which was ironic since we lacked it but finished off more confident than before. We also covered how communication has been of importance for centuries as a tool for survival and now to bring people together through many types of forms, such as virtually. Building credibility is a big one too that was brought up and very importa...

Emily Roman) Blog #1: Presentations Reflection

Public Speaking: Learning Through Presenting And Observation Throughout the past few weeks in this public speaking class, I was put into a group, did a full blown project presentation, and heard about other groups and their presenting, all while learning about public speaking and it's many aspects. I've never been a fan of presentations since I tend to be a huge nervous wreck, so it was a bit daunting when I enrolled into this class, not knowing what would come. Even with my fear, I think this was one of the best things I've done for myself because I would be able to practice and improve on my speech, while learning skills that can be applied to other courses. This was an interesting, yet clever way to get immersive with our book material, which contains information that's helpful for our public speaking. We were presented the project we needed to do and got split into groups. I, unluckily, landed on group 1... first to present?! As soon as I learned that I automaticall...

Ashley Martinez- Assignment#1 - blog

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been taking a public speaking class fully online. I want to say I really like it so far and I’ve already learned quite a bit in such a short period of time. At first, I thought a class like this might feel simple after all, we all speak every single day. But public speaking, I’ve quickly realized, is far more than just opening your mouth and saying words. It requires confidence, planning, awareness of your audience, and a lot of control over your voice and body language.  Over the course of just a few classes, we’ve gone through our textbook and presented on different chapters. Each part of the class has pushed me out of my comfort zone in one way or another.  Presentations, however, forced me to put that knowledge into practice. I realized that reading about speaking techniques is one thing, but actually applying them when your classmates are watching is another. Still, I believe everyone in the class did great. Most of us are new to colleg...

Angelina arias / assignment #1 Growing through public speaking

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to take part in a series of public speaking presentations in class—one that I presented with my group, and three that I got to watch as an audience member. To be honest, when I first heard that public speaking was going to be a big part of this course, I felt a mixture of nerves and curiosity. I knew it would be a challenge for me, but I also knew it might push me in ways I needed. Looking back now, I didn’t expect to enjoy the whole experience as much as I did, but it taught me a lot about myself—not just as a speaker, but as a listener, a teammate, and a communicator. I learned that public speaking isn’t just about the moment you stand in front of the class; it’s about the preparation, the collaboration, the self-reflection, and even the courage to let yourself grow. This was my first real taste of public speaking in this class, and because my group went first, the pressure was definitely on. Being the very first presenters made the whole ...

What a Speech Class Taught Me About Myself  When I came from Spain to pursue the American dream, I never imagined that one of the first obstacles would be a speech class. To be fair, I could excuse myself by saying that I don't have the language skills or charisma, but also that I had never had anything remotely similar to a public speaking class before. I didn't know what to expect or where to start. Although it's still too early to claim victory, I must say I'm handling it quite well and, to be honest, I'm even enjoying it . This first project has been much more than a 35-minute presentation . It has been a test of organization and time management , confirmation that I have taken a step up in maturity by not freaking out about planning, and a stroke of courage in daring to speak about something I know I have not yet mastered. Starting with my group, in the Zoom meetings we had to practice, I was able to get to know my classmates a little better in a relaxed...
